The Vitascope is an electrically driven projector that casts pictures using light. The pictures being cast are first captured on gelatine film by a kinetoscope apparatus. The film negatives created up to 50 FPS using an intermittent process. To display fresh photos, the shutter opens & shuts. This instrument can generate up to 3,000 negatives each minute.

1900’s – The first edits were made in the 1900s with tapes, scissors, and edit tables. Later then the tapes were replaced by film cement. Editors were unable to see their films while editing, as they were obliged to cut the film by exposing film strips to a light source. Typically, a movie is edited by chopping and reorganizing or eliminating elements of the film. The procedure is quite simple. A film possibly is edited using scissors & a splicing tape.

Technologically, this is film editing rather than video editing. However, it is important because it was the first means to edit motion images. This served as the conceptual foundation for video editing.

1916- The Technicolor color technique was established in 1916. Meanwhile, film editors had been experimenting with alternative colorways & some primary effects. However, Cupid Angling, the first color film, was released in 1918. This method is employed to colorize the image.

To briefly explain the process. The light beam was divided into three portions, one preferring the red part of the spectra, one green, & one blue. Each shot was recorded on an individual band of B&W film at the same time. The 3 strips were prepared & printed individually, then processed through their respective color dye; when bonded together, they formed a pretty close representation of the natural color.

1924- The Moviola, the very first video editing system, was released in 1924, enabling editors to make edits while concurrently watching their films. A Moviola is a device that enables a film editor to view footage while editing. When Iwan Serrurier created it, it was the first device for motion picture editing. The company Moviola is still in operation and is headquartered in Hollywood, with a portion of its facilities housed on one of the initial Moviola production floors.

1934: Conrad A. Nervig receives the Oscar for Best Film Editing for the movie “Eskimo.” While this is not a technical or procedural development, it does boost the prominence of video editing inside the business and among the public at large.

1950’s- Flatbed editing tables, like Steenbeck & Keller-Elektro-Mechanik (KEM), were launched as a replacement for the Moviola in the 1950s. These tables were equipped with rollers and motorized plates. In the 1950s, film splicing machines like Guillotine Tape Splicer made an entry.
